Bold and amicable in disposition, punctilious in execution, Christian McBride is the standard bearer of straight-ahead jazz bass playing in the 21st century. Here he leads his new group New Jawn, a furious “chordless” group featuring trumpeter Josh Evans, saxophonist Marcus Strickland, and drummer Nasheet Waits. They maintain a tight, harmonic structure in the horn section a la the Morgan/Shorter or Hubbard/Shorter line up of The Jazz Messengers but mostly trade in the kind of breakneck, amorphous, suggestively atonal postbop pioneered by Miles Davis’s Second Great Quintet. You may find yourself holding your breath as these players’ fire sucks up all the oxygen in the room. Two separate sets at 8 and 10 p.m.
