Jazz luminary Benny Golson is one of the most important saxophonists from the hard-bop era. In his run with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, in Lionel Hampton’s band, and as a leader of the famous Jazztet in the 1950s and early ’60s, he helped define the incipient hard-bop sound, one that swung hard and dug into the bluesy roots of jazz while maintaining an emphasis on virtuostic improvisation. He further cemented his place in the jazz pantheon by writing some of the most beloved standards in the songbook: infectious earworms like “Killer Joe” and “Whisper Not.”

At age 90, he still plays his compositions and other standards with a soft, airy tone that floats unhurriedly through the air. Two separate sets at 8 and 10 p.m.
