Bill Heid, maybe the most prominent master of the Hammond B-3 in Washington, D.C., boasts a storied resume that includes stints with jazz and blues icons like Sonny Stitt, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and David “Fathead” Newman. That all comes out in his playing; he’s a sharp soloist but can lay into a strolling groove like few others. Even when the band goes into double time, he plays along at an unhurried, buoyant pace that lifts the whole number.
He leads a trio for a concert that will be broadcast from An Die Musik Live in Baltimore.
