If you’ve been to one of the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra’s shows, you’ve noticed Brent Birckhead. He’s the sharply dressed alto saxophonist who sits swaying and rooting and smiling beatifically in the front row while others solo; then, when it’s his turn to play, he takes total charge. With parades of eighth notes that are hot as coals and loaded with soul, Birckhead sounds much like a modern-day Cannonball Adderley.
He’s also an alumnus of Lauryn Hill’s touring band and performs his own music influenced more by the smooth jazz and hip-hop-jazz fusion of the contemporary West Coast scene.
