Saxophonist Carl Grubbs is one of the elders of the Baltimore jazz scene that is close to being local jazz royalty. Grubbs’ cousin Naima – yes, that Naima! – was married to his most formative teacher: the fire-breathing saint of improvised music, John Coltrane. Grubbs absorbed his master’s teachings and tone well – he plays with a strong understanding of the blues and gospel roots and the kind of sheets of sound preaching that Trane became famous for during his modal and spiritual jazz journeys.
He leads a group featuring his pupils and rising Baltimore jazz stars Ebban and Ephraim Dorsey – both saxophonists as well – for a show that will be live streamed for free from the Keystone Korner club in Baltimore.
