Truly one of the master innovators and progenitors of the radical approaches to jazz in the 1960s, Carla Bley will make her first DC appearance in recent memory. As a pianist, she was involved in performing and organizing with many of the historic names in that period in New York City. However, it is perhaps as a composer where she has received the most recognition. An important activity of hers was in helping to establish the Jazz Composers’ Guild in New York, which boasted a lasting camaraderie and collaboration among the musicians of that era in the city, especially those associated with the burgeoning avant-garde movement. Quite simply, Ms. Bley (she was once married to Paul Bley) is at the top of the pantheon of jazz composition.
