Pianist Christian Sands has deep ties to D.C. jazz: he was mentored by the late, great Dr. Billy Taylor and frequently shares stages with Ben Williams. His music often from a more global perspective, bringing in the rhythmic influence of Afro-Cuban jazz and West African percussion. His own tone rests somewhere around Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, strongly rooted in the bop tradition but containing a flexibility and spryness that allows his touch to flow with the array of rhythms behind him. Two separate sets at 8 and 10 p.m.
