Saxophonist Craig Alston’s tone may sound brusque and burnished at times, but can also sink into soft, luxurious melodies and solos to match the mood. He’s a strong straight-ahead bandleader that has earned the respect of scene elders like James King, Eric Kennedy and the dearly departed Larry Willis.
He hails from Baltimore, and has earned a Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Heroes Award for his work promoting the scene there.
He leads a quartet – Rodney Kelley Jr on keyboards, Cory Baker on bass and John Lamkin III on drums – in a concert that will be broadcast from An Die Musik Live in Baltimore.
