Pianist Ellington Carthan shares some musical DNA with the most famous bearer of his name. Carthan’s work parrallels the more symphonic/neo-classical jazz that Duke Ellington made with Billy Strayhorn, combining the lush harmonies of jazz and classical music with more classical form. Carthan sticks closer to jazz tradition but often arranges classical pieces for a more improvised setting. He also loves to let his fingers swim across the ivories, creating soothing, fluid and enchanting melodies.
Here he teams up with Ekep Nkwelle, a lauded senior at Howard University who came up through the ranks of D.C. arts at the feet of Davey Yarborough and Mark G. Meadows.
The duo’s show will be livestreamed by An Die Musik Live.
The link to the livestream will be emailed once you’ve purchased a ticket.
