* Heidi Martin: ‘Abbey!’

September 24, 2015 @ 8:00 pm
Atlas Performing Arts Center
1333 H Street Northeast
Washington, DC 20002

The vocalist Heidi Martin is among D.C.’s treasures. She emits messages complex but clear, with an essence of ensconced resilience that hints at Billie Holiday, and a quavering force not unlike Joni Mitchell’s. But as a poet and a thinker she’s most closely linked to Abbey Lincoln, whose ear was always equally attuned to sensuality and justice. You want to hear Martin treat her hero’s material; there’s something captivating about their connection. In this program, Martin will be doing it in full: reading Lincoln’s poetry, plus quotes transcribed from interviews, and singing a full program of Lincoln’s original music.
