Drummer Joe Chambers got his start on the D.C. scene in the 1960s, when he was a founding member of the JFK Quintet. He went on to perform with legends like Max Roach (in the elder drummer’s M’Boom percussion troupe) and Sonny Rollins. Chambers, a subtle and sensitive drummer, focuses on the Moving Pictures Orchestra, his own large ensemble, wherein he enacts heady compositions with a snaky, undulating swing feel.
At the Kennedy Center, he leads a special tribute to Roach’s M’Boom, an ensemble that featured a wide range of percussionists on instruments like the marimba, timpani and musical saw. Two separate sets at 7 and 9 p.m.
