* Marcus Strickland’s Twi-Life

November 20, 2018 @ 8:00 pm
City Winery
1350 Okie St NE
Washington, DC 20002
$20 - $28

The multi-reed player Marcus Strickland came up through the ranks in band led by the iconic avant-inclined trumpeter Dave Douglas and the hard-bop paragon percussionist Roy Haynes. His tone often floats in the higher registers of his instrument, suggesting a sound not unlike Wayne Shorter’s gravity-lax style. With his own group, Twi-Life, Strickland seeks to re-create the J.Dilla, jazz hip-hop synthesis in the live band setting. The group performs at City Winery with a focus on its recent release, People of the Sun.

Akua Allrich and Kris Funn’s duo project, Idol Beings, opens.
