Chilean-born tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana was the first female instrumentalist to win the prestigious Monk Competition when she took home the top honors in 2013. She has been best known in the jazz world for her “chordless” trios, playing with the kind of deep sonority and brawn of Sonny Rollins.

The D.C. Jazz Festival replays Aldana’s performance from the 2018 DCJF as part of its weekly “From the Archives” on Facebook and YouTube.
