* Michael Thomas Quintet

February 8, 2020 @ 9:00 pm
Twins Jazz
1344 U St NW
DC 20009
$15 (Plus $10 Minimum and $2 Fees)

Whether one is standing outside Twin’s second story-haunt on U Street or lounging in the National Gallery of Art’s sculpture garden, Michael Thomas’ trumpet is guaranteed to cut through the din sharply but also sweetly. The veteran bandleader in the area performs heaving hard-bop in the vein of Art Blakey’s 1960s output with the Jazz Messengers and other disciples in that orbit like trumpeters Lee Morgan or Freddie Hubbard. He leads his longtime quintet: Zach Graddy on tenor saxophone, Darius Scott on piano, Kent Miller on bass and Frank Williams on drums. Two separate sets at 9 and 11 p.m.
