Paul Carr hems the 10th annual Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, featuring acts drawn all around the Mid-Atlantic states, from high school and college ensembles to area regulars.
Day 1 highlights include:
5 p.m. Opening ceremony feature DeAndrey Howard’s Collector’s Edition – The area straight-ahead stalwart DeAndrey Howard plays trumpet and sometimes shouts the blues. Together with his longstanding band, Collector’s Edition, he plays standards with a friendly, inviting touch.
7:30 and 9 p.m. Eric Byrd Trio – Vocalist and pianist Eric Byrd sings in a silky croon that’s not too far from Nat “King” Cole – but with more soul and gospel influence. He performs regularly with his trio, featuring Bhagwan Khalsa on bass and Alphonso Young Jr. on drums.
10 p.m. Regina Carter’s ‘Simply Ella’ – The fearlessly inventive violinist and MacArthur Fellowship Award winner Regina Carter celebrates the 100th birthday of her idol and jazz master Ella Fitzgerald.
