Paul Carr hems the 11th annual Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, featuring acts drawn all around the Mid-Atlantic states, from high school and college ensembles to area regulars and national

Day One highlights include:

5 p.m. – Opening Ceremony with Deandrey Howard’s Collectors Edition.  Trumpeter Deandrey Howard has been a longtime leader in the straight-ahead scene, an elder of that community (and co-founder of the Jazz & Cultural Society). He plays in an unhurried, almost strolling style that invites you right into the music alongside him. He plays with his regular group Collector’s Edition.

7 p.m. – Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra. Paul Carr gathers some of the best area student musicians – from not just the DMV but all across the Mid-Atlantic – for an all-star group.

7 p.m. – Bass to Infinity. Bassist Buster Williams may not be one of the best known names in jazz, but he’s one of the great “musicians’ musician” – respected most of all by his peers and colleagues. He played with everyone from Miles to Chet Baker. He is the subject of this new documentary Bass to Infinity. Following the screening will be a Q&A with Williams himself, moderated by the great Willard Jenkins.
