Cogitative and crafty, the trombonist Shannon Gunn is also an instigator around the D.C. jazz scene, where she runs a big band and sometimes organizes concerts. (Disclosure: They include a CapitalBop collaboration, the Jazz and Freedom Festival.)
She leads a tribute to pianist Carla Bley, truly one of the master innovators, and a progenitor of radical new approaches to jazz since the 1960s. NEA Jazz Master Carla Bley, 82, will make her first D.C. appearance with her trio in recent memory the next night at a special Capitalbop show.
Presented as part of the 2019 Washington Women in Jazz Festival and the Smithsonian’s “Take 5!” series.
