Rhizome’s Spirits Rise Festival celebrates the work of artists on the Astral Spirits, an Austin, Texas-based label that puts out tapes and digital recordings that highlight the new generations of free jazz heavy-hitters (Disclosure: They released Luke Stewart’s, Capitalbop’s director of presenting) album Works for Upright Bass and Amplifier.

This one-night festival showcases Astral Spirits talent from around the country, including some of our own local favorites.

Performers include the Ancestral Duo, the spiritually minded free jazz project by Stewart and Jamal Moore; Coy Fish, Sarah Hughes’ free quartet; creative composer and bassist Brandon Lopez; and Spires That In The Sunset Rise, an improvising duo that takes inspiration from Appalachian folk music, free poetry, psychedelia and fee jazz.
