Pianist Stanley Cowell was one of those musicians totally immersed in the traditions that shaped his playing. The warm, broad harmonic approach Cowell had for the ivories came as much from Western art music as it did American jazz and African music ideas. The chords he played were wide and open, welcoming both the jazz initiate and the old masters to experience the sonic wonders he performed.
Cowell passed away in the last days of 2020. The Keystone Korner club in Baltimore pays tribute to the departed master with a special tribute concert (co-sponsored by The Piano Choir, Inc. and the DC Jazz Festival) broadcast by livestream from the Charm City venue.
The group features some of Cowell’s old collaborators like alto saxophonist Bruce Williams alongside Baltimore maestros like trumpeter Sean Jones (the line-up also features his daughter Sunny Cowell on vocals).
The link to the livestream will be emailed once you’ve purchased a ticket and will be active for 72 hours.
