Sure, trombonist Steve Turre makes a great straight-ahead jazz player, but there’s always something in his playing that brims and pushes. In his urge to expand the very tradition of which he is a part, the expressive, tonally roving musician resembles a former mentor of his: reedman Rahsaan Roland Kirk. He leads a tribute to his mentor with a pair of sets at Blues Alley, also featuring the virtuosic and expansive saxophonist James Carter. Two separate sets at 8 and 10 p.m.
