The Bad Plus — Reid Anderson on bass, Dave King on drums and Orrin Evans on piano — improvises on acoustic instruments with a captivating stridency. Whether that makes them a jazz band, per se, is a common point of contention. They’re interested in the legacy of Thelonious Monk (it’s in their sense of confrontation with levity) but they dip that into a petri dish with the musics of John Cage and Brian Eno, for instance. Whatever you call it, the trio’s sound is unlike that of any other band, and it’s worth hearing. Two separate sets at 8 and 10 p.m.
