The Bad Plus –  Reid Anderson on bass , Dave King on drums and NOW Orrin Evans on piano– improvises on acoustic instruments with a captivating stridency. Whether that makes them a jazz band, per se, is a common point of contention. They’re interested in the legacy of Thelonious Monk – it’s in their sense of confrontation with levity – but they dip that into a bubbling petri dish with the musics of John Cage and Brian Eno. Whatever you call it, the trio’s sound is unlike that of any other band – and it’s worth hearing.
