Ali Shaheed Muhammad is best known as the man on the ones and twos for the iconic jazz/hip-hop fusion outfit A Tribe Called Quest. He teamed up with composer and pianist Adrian Younge in 2016 to do the soundtrack for Luke Cage, drawing on classic film scoring as much as hip-hop, jazz and R&B. The two continue work under the name “The Midnight Hour,” performing original music and covers that blend the sonic palette from last 30 years of American black music. It flows in the same vein as Robert Glasper’s Black Radio albums but is closer to Quincy Jones in inspiration than J.Dilla.
