We’re pleased to announce that the D.C. Jazz Loft is back this weekend, for the first show since the rousingly successful D.C. Jazz Loft Series at the DC Jazz Festival. (You can read City Paper reviews of those shows, here and here.) Now, we’re returning to our regular monthly show schedule — and we’ve got an amazing display of local talent lined up for this Sunday. Saxophone master Marshall Keys, a linchpin of the D.C. scene, will present his combo, as will the exploratory saxophonist Matt Rippetoe and the forceful avant-garde drummer Ethan Snyder. Don’t miss out on this show!

As usual, the loft will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Dunes, the cozy art gallery and performance venue in Columbia Heights. Admission is by donation (we suggest $10, which goes straight to the musicians) and there’s a full bar. At the end of the evening, any musicians in attendance are encouraged to come up and partake in a night-capping jam session.

MARSHALL KEYS

Marshall Keys, a graceful and gripping saxophonist, can sing the blues or swing to the rhythms of bebop with a laid-back sense of cool. A fluid player, Keys also deftly handles the silkier curves of jazz-rock fusion. His first professional experience came with the famous Blackbyrds, and he has been performing in the District for decades. Nowadays, you can catch him at any number of clubs around town. MATT RIPPETOE QUARTET

Tenor saxophonist Matt Rippetoe has been an important force in the D.C. jazz community since the early 2000s. He has just recently returned after a brief sojourn in New York City. Before his departure, he was be heard regularly at Bossa Bistro in Adams Morgan. In fact, his album “Boink” was the debut from Bossa Beats, the venue’s short-lived record label. His original tunes are forward-thinking and fierce, while honoring the jazz tradition. Expect to hear Rippetoe alongside D.C. Jazz Loft favorite and fellow tenor saxophonist Brian Settles, plus Eric Harper on bass and Dave McDonald on drums. [Luke Stewart]

ETHAN SNYDER

Ethan Snyder is a masterful drummer who now resides in Baltimore. He performed as a member of local guitar wizard Anthony Pirog’s ensemble at the D.C. Jazz Loft last year, and as a substitute drummer for OOO at the last loft at Red Door. It is clear that he is firmly rooted in the school of free improvisation. He is an active member of Baltimore’s rich improvised music scene, which organizes around weekly performances at the Windup Space. The series is run by the Out of Your Head collective, a large group of musicians who converge on the space weekly to perform in different formats. Since moving to Baltimore after graduating from the Berklee School of Music, Snyder has engaged strongly with the fertile creative communities in both Baltimore and D.C. He will perform with a group of like-minded musicians, presenting original compositions and far-out improvisational structures. [LS]
