Ahmad Jamal first sat down at a piano at age 3 and has been playing professionally for almost eight decades now. The NEA Jazz Master is an undisputed master of his instrument and in the form of jazz, or as he calls it “American Classical Music.” His touch, whether solo or with an ensemble, has shifted tone and tempo over time but remains rooted in lush harmonics, narrative melodies and a poised touch to the ivories; like Chopin, much of the beauty in his art comes from the specific weight he assigns each keystroke.

Jamal is semi-retired now but makes a rare appearance at the Kennedy Center with his working quartet of the last two decades: James Cammack on bass, Herlin Riley on drums and Manolo Badrena on percussion.
